There are a number of people I would like to thank for the help they have given me with this book. First, Rowland White, whose idea it was in the first place and who, as ever, has been a great sounding board throughout the research and writing. Rowland – thank you.

    Second, I must thank the veterans and their families. Les Munro put up with me for two days in New Zealand and since then has put up with numerous further enquiries. He's a great man and a true gentleman. So too is Johnny Johnson, who has been grilled repeatedly and has been endlessly patient and helpful. In Vancouver, Grant McDonald allowed both me and a film crew to invade his house, and, again, he was hugely generous with his time and extremely helpful, putting me in touch with Ken Brown's wife, Beryl. Thank you to her as well, for talking to me about Ken. It really has been an extraordinary privilege to meet and get to know these heroes.

    It has also been wonderful to meet two Dam Buster children – Shere Lowe and Joe McCarthy Jr, who not only welcomed me to their home in the States but have been enormously helpful and generous, allowing me to see and use their parents' papers and subsequently sending photos, old interviews and other material across the Atlantic. Thank you, Shere and Joe.

    Enormous thanks are also due to Barnes Wallis's daughters, Elizabeth Gaunt and Dr Mary Stopes-Roe. Mary, especially, has been incredibly helpful, furnishing me not only with memories of her parents and childhood, but also with allowing me access to many of her parents' papers. I am indebted to you, Mary – thank you.

    In Germany, Michelle Miles and her husband, Ingo, have once again been incredible in ferreting out key documents from the archives in Freiburg and doing quite superb translations. It was Michelle who found the crucial document containing the cost of the reparation work, a nugget of information I was desperate to find out from the start. I am enormously grateful to you both. I am also very grateful to Karl-Heinz Bremmer, Karl Schäfer and Ernst-Friedrich Gallenkamp. Closer to home, both Lalla and Tom Hitchings, and Elli Lanyon, have been brilliantly helpful in transcribing many hours of interviews. Once again, my heartfelt thanks.
