I am here to announce my retirement from the game of basketball. It wont be anotherannouncement to baseball or anything to thatnature.
Mentally， Im exhausted. I dont feel I have a challenge. Physically， I feel Great. The last timein 1993 I had other agendas. I felt that I wantedto play baseball and I felt that at my age， it was agood opportunity and time to do it. And with thedeath of my father， and I was basically trying todeal with that.
Actually I talked to Jerry last year oncethe season ended and I told Jerry at that time，mentally， I was a little exhausted. I didnt knowif I would play next year. I wanted to put himon awareness so that he could possibly preparegoing into next season. And Jerry， once we hadour conversation， wanted me to take time as I didin 1993 to make sure that it was the right decisionbecause it was going to be the final decision.

I retired the first time when Phil Jacksonwas the coach. And I think that even with Philbeing the coach I would have had a tough time，mentally finding the challenge for myself. Although he can somehow present challengesfor me， I dont know if he could have presentedthe challenge for me to continue on to thisseason. Even though middle way of this season Iwanted to continue to play a couple more years，but at the end of this season I was mentallydrained and tired. So I cant say that he wouldhave restored that.
I will support the Chicago Bulls. I think thegame itself is a lot bigger than Michael Jordan. I，ve been given an opportunity by people beforeme， to name a few， Kareem Abdul Jabbar， DoctorJ， Eljohn Baylor， Jerry West. These guys playedthe game way before Michael Jordan was bornand Michael Jordan came on the heels of all thatactivity. Mr. Stern and what hes done for theleague， gave me an opportunity to play the gameof basketball. I played it to the best I could play it，and I tried to enhance the game itself. Ive tried tobe the best basketball player that I could be.

That shows a small segment injoy， ease and comfort while anequal portion struggle on withlittle hope in the fortunes of theremainder， either on the rise or onthe wane in this confounding tideof so many damn things that wegrow oblivious to the shifts in thequality of our lives.

And perhapsweve forgotten the courage it took forthe crew of the shuttle. But they， theChallenger Seven， were aware of thedangers， but overcame them and did theirjobs brilliantly. We mourn seven heroes： Michael Smith， Dick Scobee， JudithResnik， Ronald McNair， Ellison Onizuka，Gregory Jarvis， and Christa McAuliffe. We mourn their loss as a nation together.
For the families of the seven， wecannot bear， as you do， the full impactof this tragedy. But we feel the loss，and were thinking about you so verymuch. Your loved ones were daring andbrave， and they had that special grace，that special spirit that says， “Give me achallenge， and Ill meet it with joy.” Theyhad a hunger to explore the universe anddiscover its truths. They wished to serve，and they did. They served all of us.
We，ve grown used to wonders inthis century. Its hard to dazzle us. Butfor twenty-five years the United Statesspace program has been doing just that.We，ve grown used to the idea of space，and， perhaps we forget that weve onlyjust begun. Were still pioneers. The Challenger crewwas pulling us into the future， and wellcontinue to follow them.
I，ve always had great faith in and respectfor our space program. And what happenedtoday does nothing to diminish it. We donthide our space program. We dont keepsecrets and cover things up. We do it all upfront and in public. Thats the way freedomis， and we wouldnt change it for a minute.
We，ll continue our quest in space. There will be more shuttle flights and moreshuttle crews and， yes， more volunteers，more civilians， more teachers in space. Nothing ends here； our hopes and ourjourneys continue.
I want to add that I wish I could talkto every man and woman who works forNASA， or who worked on this missionand tell them： “Your dedication andprofessionalism have moved and impressedus for decades. And we know of youranguish. We share it.”

Good morning. This is a day ofremembrance for our country. And I amhonored to be joined at the White Housetoday by Americans who lost so muchin the terrible events of September the11th， 2001， and have felt that loss everyday since.
Three years ago， the struggle ofgood against evil was compressed intoa single morning. In the space of only102 minutes， our country lost morecitizens than were lost in the attack onPearl Harbor. Time has passed， but thememories do not fade. We rememberthe images of fire， and the final calls oflove， and the courage of rescuers whosaw death and did not flee.
We remember the cruelty ofenemies who murdered the innocent，and rejoiced in our suffering. Weremember the many good lives thatended too soon-which no one hadthe right to take.

The terrorist attacks on September the11th were a turning point for our nation. Wesaw the goals of a determined enemy： toexpand the scale of their murder， and forceAmerica to retreat from the world. And ournation accepted a mission： We will defeat thisenemy.
The United States of America isdetermined to guard our homeland againstfuture attacks. As the September the 11thCommission concluded， our country is saferthan we were three years ago， but we are notyet safe.
So every day， many thousands ofdedicated men and women are on duty-as airmarshals， airport screeners， cargo inspectors，border patrol officers， and first responders. At the same time， Americans serving in theFBI and CIA are performing their daily workwith professionalism， while we reform thoseagencies to see the dangers around the nextcorner. Our country is grateful to all ourfellow citizens who watch for the enemy， andanswer the alarms， and guard America by theirvigilance.

More than three-quarters of alQaedas key members and associateshave been detained or killed. We knowthat there is still a danger to America. Sowe will not relent until the terrorists whoplot murder against our people are foundand dealt with.
The United States is also determinedto advance democracy in the broaderMiddle East， because freedom will bringthe peace and security we all want. Whenthe peoples of that region are given newhope and lives of dignity， they will let goof old hatreds and resentments， and theterrorists will find fewer recruits. And asgovernments of that region join in thefight against terror instead of harboringterrorists， America and the world will bemore secure. Our present work in Iraq andAfghanistan is difficult. It is also historicand essential. By our commitment andsacrifice today， we will help transformthe Middle East， and increase the safetyof our children and grandchildren.

And America will never forget the ones who have fallen-men and women lastseen doing their duty， whose names we will honor forever.
The war on terror goes on. The resolve of our nation is still being tested. And inthe face of danger we are showing our character. Three years after the attack on ourcountry， Americans remain strong and resolute， patient in a just cause， and confident ofthe victory to come.
