Saying Goodbye to Nuclear Winter

    October 1983，Washington, the US

    The“post-nuclear war world”academic conference was held by the International Atomic Energy Organisation in Washington as scheduled. The majority of the Congress, which was controlled by Democrats with a minority of Republicans, were arguing about the appropriations for the“Star Wars Project”advanced by Reagan.An academic thesis advanced by five American scholars to the conference solemnly envisaged a theory of human life in“nuclear winter”.After careful calculation and reasoning, this theory warned the leaders that if the US and the former Soviet Union attacked a major city in a nuclear war, then the waves of heat and smoke generated by the nuclear explosions would cause a mass of clouds in the atmosphere of 1 or 10 km that could cover the sunlight but could not stop the nuclear radiation.In this way, the northern hemisphere would be covered by long nights for a couple of weeks with temperatures dropping to minus 15-25 degrees.In this situation most creatures, including humans and plants, would be extinct.

    It was not a horrible delusional world created by the scientists. An atomic bomb is strong enough to destroy mankind.But the total number of nuclear weapons hanging over the heads of mankind has reached a level which could create 200 nuclear winters.

    As far as the period when the 33rd President of the US, Eisenhower, was in power, he had already done a nuclear test in the desert of Colorado. After the test, the radiating dust and smoke covered the sky, and all that was left was loneliness and sadness.

    In fact, the loneliness and sadness were not limited to the initiators alone, but also the whole human race.

    Nuclear winter is the last tomb that humans dig for themselves. It was never their original intention.

    Our ancestors were a tribe of imagination. During the primitive stages of human civilisation, they used a leaf to cover their private parts.As they lived in the forest, placing their heads on the mountains while listening to the roaring of the animals, they became obsessed with the beautiful long night they saw after looking to the sky.All of a sudden, the plants around them grew colourful wings while their bodies sunk down.Their wings of imagination flew.So there were the stories of Chang'e, and the Palace of Heaven where all the gods lived, and also the flying goddesses in Mogao Caves and the eternal aviation dream of a nation……

    The aviation dream has been worshiped by generations of people, and gradually was made a reality.

    The alchemists of the Han and Tang Dynasties worked tirelessly；and though they didn't invent the drug for eternal life with their alchemy stoves, they produced the first fire of human civilisation—gunpowder and primitive rockets.

    The notorious alchemists used their sorcery to facilitate the birth of a new era；a group of Taoist priests who roamed around ushered in the Qin Emperor's early dream of weapons and the Great Wall. It was the rocket dream that motivated human civilisation.

    Since the time of the northern Song Dynasty, the Chinese army has had gunpowder weapons. During the wars between the Song and Jin, the Jin's bombs，“Zhentianlei”（thunder shaking the heaven），eventually shattered the Zhao family's Song Dynasty.

    When Genghis Khan led his rolling cavalries to attack the castles in Baghdad, the flying explosives roared by. The entire European continent was still in the grip of the medieval era……

    Chinese gunpowder and primitive vockets were sent to the Arab and the Europe Successively.

    However, in just a few centuries, Europe rose while the Chinese empire fell. Why?It was an ancient vicious circle, in which all the students of this empire could achieve prominence in the bureaucracy so long as they could compose some standardised essays.Even the most outstanding scientist of the Ming Dynasty, Shen Kuo, set his ultimate value in the bureaucracy instead of science……

    How could Chinese civilisation remain strong if it went on like this?

    When the Westerners'sharp weapons broke the thick red walls of the Forbidden City—when the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 struck down the oceanic great wall of the Chinese soldiers—when the Allied Eight Powers shattered the last bit of dignity of the Qing Empire—there seemed to be no other choices left for the Chinese.

    After 400 years of journeying, rockets returned to their homeland in China. But it was no longer a simple cycle.The Chinese still had to start from zero……

    The rocket dream burned with glory, but also tragedies.

    Glory and dream, dream and tragedy—there wasn't a strict line between them.

    When a primitive rocket propeller pushed him up, Wan Hu, the pioneer of the Ming Dynasty, hasn't expected that he would represent the first great tragedy of mankind.

    On October 4，1957，when the first Soviet satellite was sent into the universe, thus truly realising the dream of flying to the moon, it was a glorious moment for humanity.

    Although there were defeats and failures, astronautic and missile technologies are still pushing human civilisation forward. Evolving around the space development represented by nuclear astronautic technology, the new revolution would take place in the areas of breeder reactor magnetohydrodynamics, conduction, laser and magnetic suspension technology, which moved us into the“era of plasma”.

    Following the USA's promulgation of high border strategies, humans have already stepped into an age where the universe and the nuclear overlap. The concepts of territory and borders have been fundamentally changed.Especially after the maturing of the space shuttle and space station technology, humanity's competition on earth and ocean have extended outward to incorporate the entire universe.The concepts of territory and security of the United States have adopted three changes：

    If there is no security on the ocean, there is no security on land, which represents the change from land borders to land-ocean borders.

    If there is no security in the sky, there is no security in either land or ocean, thus representing the change from a land-ocean border to a sky-land-ocean border.

    If there is no security in space, then there is no security on land, ocean or sky, representing the change from a sky-land-ocean border to a high border.

    However, the Chinese security concept is still located in our own territory. Whenever it comes to our territory, this would include the entire 9.6 million square kilometres territory and the coast line of 18，000 kilometres.But we have forgotten the infinite universe above, where there is an unsettled border line.Therefore, when foreign satellites and space shuttles approach our space, apart from hiding, there would appear to be no other solution……

    Every nation and every country should have its own high border, just like everyone should have the sky of his own childhood.

    Just as I was about to finish this book in Beijing, which I started last summer at my hometown in Yunnan Plateau，（and Beijing would never be the home of my heart），I suddenly remembered the autumn nights in my hometown. I remembered the starry sky used to belong to be me when I was in my grandmother's arms.My literary awareness began with fairy tales of counting stars as bonfires of hope.I have spent every cool night in autumn searching for the hope and expectations of my life by counting stars.

    Therefore, on the quiet road in Banqiao town before dawn, in the straw piles on the red soil land, the stars which provoked a passionate young boy's dreams have led him to search and struggle as he travelled great distances. When I talked to the stars and flew in the universe, it seemed to be that there was no more threat of war, sin, ugliness, fake kindness, nor darkness……

    After roaming around with the Chinese missile troops in the remote forests, I washed off my last bit of tan in the capital city. But eventually I found the starry sky and my attachment to a hometown which only belonged to childhood.If there is an“if”in history, if there is an“if”in life, we wouldn't need war, missiles, atomic bombs, killings nor nuclear winter.There would only be the beautiful fairy tales of my grandmother in the village courtyard during the autumn nights.There would only be the melodious songs of the shepherd boy in the fields during spring.
