Notes on the Study Materials

    This section is intended to help both students and teachers with a guided reading of the text. There are chapter summaries, general discussion points, activities and study questions to help you explore this wonderful novel. The tasks focus on skills that are tested at KS3 and GCSE level but they can, and should be, expanded on by teachers, tailored to suit classes' needs and modernized where applicable. The tasks can be updated and adapted depending on the resources available in a wide range of schools, for example, diary entries can become blogs, character profiles can be structured as web-based design tasks, etc.

    A separate advanced studies section follows, aimed at helping AS- and A2-level students explore some of the wider and more in-depth implications of the novel. Please note that italicized statements have been formulated to generate discussion; they are not quotations from the text itself.
