The letter that is reproduced on the endpapers is from a fifteen-year-old Winston Churchill to his father, Lord Randolph. Winston wrote it on June 8, 1890, from Harrow, the elite private school (known as public school in Britain) where he was boarding. It reads:

    My dear Papa,

    Thanks awfully. I was quite astounded-stricken all of a heap in fact! I am not going in for my preliminary this time as I am not strong enough in geometrical drawing.

    I drank the Abbess's health w' Lemon squash & we eat her luck in strawberry mash! Good Bye

    With greatest love

    I remain

    Your loving son

    Winston S. Churchill

    No doubt the young Winston enjoyed making the toast of sweet citrus drink (the Lemon squash) and crushed strawberries.

    As for the Abbess-that was the name of Lord Randolph's racehorse.
