I protest to you, Gentlemen, A that if I had to choose between a so-called University, which dispensed with residence and tutorial superintendence, and gave its degrees to any person who passed an examination in a wide range of subjects, and a University which had no professors or examinations at all, but merely brought a number of young men together for three or four years, and then sent them away as the University of Oxford is said to have done some sixty years since, if I were asked which of these two methods was the better discipline of the intellect,……the more successful in training, moulding, enlarging the mind, which sent out men the more fitted for their secular duties, which produced better public men, men of the world, men whose names would descend to posterity, I have no hesitation in giving the preference to that University which did nothing, over that which exacted of its members an acquaintance with every science under the sun.
……When a multitude of young men, keen, open-hearted, sympathetic, and observant, as young men are, come together and freely mix with each other, B they are sure to learn one from another, even if there be no one to teach them;the conversation of all is a series of lectures to each, and they gain for themselves new ideas and views, fresh matter of thought, and distinct principles for judging and acting, day by day.……Here then is a real teaching, whatever be its standards and principles, true or false;and it at least tends towards cultivation of the intellect;it at least recognizes that knowledge is something more than a sort of passive reception of scraps and details;it is a something, and it does a something, which never will issue from the most strenuous efforts of a set of teachers, with no mutual sympathies and no intercommunion, of a set of examiners with no opinions which they dare profess, and with no common principles, who are teaching or questioning a set of youths who do not know them, and do not know each other, on a large number of subjects, different in kind, and connected by no wide philosophy, three times a week, or three times a year, or once in three years, in chill lecture-rooms or on a pompous anniversary.

Now from these instances, to which many more might be added, it is plain, first, that the communication of knowledge certainly is either a condition or the means of that sense of enlargement or enlightenment, of which at this day we hear so much in certain quarters:this cannot be denied;but next, it is equally plain, that such communication is not the whole of the process.AThe enlargement consists, not merely in the passive reception into the mind of a number of ideas hitherto unknown to it, but in the mind"s energetic and simultaneous action upon and towards and among those new ideas, which are rushing in upon it.It is the action of a formative power, reducing to order and meaning the matter of our acquirements;it is a making the objects of our knowledge subjectively our own, or it is a digestion of what we receive, into the substance of our previous state of thought;and without this no enlargement is said to follow.BThere is no enlargement, unless there be a comparison of ideas one with another, as they come before the mind, and a systematizing of them.We feel our minds to be growing and expanding then, when we not only learn, but refer what we learn to what we know already. It is not a mere addition to our knowledge which is the illumination;but the locomotion, the movement onwards, of that mental center, to which both what we know and what we are learning, the accumulating mass of our acquirements, gravitates. And therefore a truly great intellect, and recognized to be such by the common opinion of mankind, is one which takes a connected view of old and new, past and present, far and near, and which has an insight into the influence of all these one on another;without which there is now whole, and no center. It possesses the knowledge, not only of things, but also of their mutual and true relations;knowledge, not merely considered as acquirement, but as philosophy.
Accordingly, when this analytic, distributive, harmonizing process is away, the mind experiences no enlargement, and is not reckoned as enlightened or comprehensive, whatever it may add to its knowledge. For instance, a great memory does not make a philosopher, any more than a dictionary can be called a grammar.

AThe enlargement consists, not merely in the passive reception into the mind of a number of ideas hitherto unknown to it, but in the mind"s energetic and simultaneous action upon and towards and among those new ideas, which are rushing in upon it.
知识的增长不仅在于被动地将一堆原来不懂的观念接纳到大脑中,而是及时对涌入大脑的新观念实施积极有力的处理。
本句的主要结构是:the enlargement consists not in……but in……
BThere is no enlargement, unless there be a comparison of ideas one with another, as they come before the mind, and a systematizing of them.
如果不把一种观念与另一种观念进行比较并将其系统化,就没有知识增长可言。
本句主句为:there is no enlargement;unless 引起的从句有两个主语——a comparison of ideas, a systematizing of them;as they come before the mind 为插入语,补充说明时间或方式。

Benjamin Franklin, to whom this University owes so much, realized too that while basic principles of natural science, of morality and of the science of society were eternal and immutable, the application of these principles necessarily changes with the patterns of living conditions from generation to generation.I am certain that he would insist, were he with us today, that it is the whole duty of the philosopher and the educator to apply the eternal ideals of truth and goodness and justice in terms of the present and not terms of the past.Growth and change are the law of all life.Yesterday"s answers are inadequate for today"s problems—just as the solutions of today will not fill the needs of tomorrow.
AEternal truths will be neither true nor eternal unless they have fresh meaning for every new social situation.
It is the function of education, the function of all of the great institutions of learning in the United States, to provide continuity for our national life-to transmit to youth the best of our culture that has been tested in the fire of history. It is equally the obligation of education to train the minds and the talents of our youth;to improve, through creative citizenship, our American institutions in accord with the requirements of the future.
We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.
It is in great universities like this that the ideas which can assure our national safety and make tomorrow"s history, are being forged and shaped. Civilization owes most to the men and Women, known and unknown, whose free, inquiring minds and restless intellects could not be subdued by the power of tyranny. This is no time for any man to withdraw into some ivory tower and proclaim the right to hold himself aloof from the problems and the agonies of his society. The times call for bold belief that the world can be changed by man"s endeavor, and that this endeavor can lead to something new and better.BNo man can sever the bonds that unite him to his society simply by averting his eyes.He must ever be receptive and sensitive to the new;and have sufficient courage and skill to face novel facts and to deal with them.

As most schools are set up today, learning is compulsory. It is an Ought:even worse, a Must, enforced by regular hours and rigid discipline. And the young sneer at the Oughts and resist the Musts with all their energy. The feeling often lasts through a lifetime.AFor too many of us, learning appears to be a surrender of our own will to external direction, a sort of enslavement.
This is a mistake. Learning is a natural pleasure, inborn and instinctive, one of the essential pleasures of the human race.Watch a small child, at an age too young to have had any mental habits implanted by training. Some delightful films made by the late Dr.Arnold Gesell of Yale University show little creatures who can barely talk investigating problems with all the zeal and excitement of explorers, making discoveries with the passion and absorption of dedicated scientists. At the end of each successful investigation, there comes over each tiny face an expression of pure heartfelt pleasure.
But if the pleasure of learning is universal, why are there so many dull, incurious people in the world? It is because they were made dull, by bad teaching, by isolation, by surrender to routine;sometimes, too, by the pressure of hard work and poverty;or by the toxin of riches, with all their ephemeral and trivial delights. With luck, resolution and guidance, however, the human mind can survive not only poverty but even wealth.
This pleasure is not confined to learning from textbooks, which are too often tedious. But it does include learning from books.Sometimes, when I stand in a big library like the Library of Congress, or Butler Library at Columbia, and gaze round me at the millions of books, I feel a sober, earnest delight hard to convey except by a metaphor. These are not lumps of lifeless paper, but minds alive on the shelves. From each of them goes out its own voice, as inaudible as the streams of sound conveyed by electric waves beyond the range of our hearing;and just as the touch of button on our stereo will fill the room with music, so by B opening one of these volumes, one can call into range a voice far distant in time and space, and hear it speaking, mind to mind, heart to heart.

But, far beyond books, learning means keeping the mind open and active to receive all kinds of experience. One of the best-informed men I ever knew was a cowboy who rarely read a newspaper and never a book but who had ridden many thousands of miles through one of the western states. He knew his state as thoroughly as a surgeon knows the human body.He loved it, and understood it.ANot a mountain, not a canyon which had not much to tell him;not a change in the weather that he could not interpret. And so, among the pleasures of learning, we should include travel:travel with an open mind, an alert eye and a wish to understand other peoples, other places, rather than looking in them for a mirror image of oneself. If I were a young man today I resolve to see-no, to learn all the 50 states before I was 35.
Learning also means learning to practice, or at least to appreciate, an art. Every new art you learn appears like a new window on the universe;it is like acquiring a new sense.Because I was born and brought up in Glasgow, Scotland, a hideous 19th century industrial city, I did not understand the slightest thing about architecture until I was in my 20s.Since then, I have learned a little about the art, and it has been a constant delight.
Crafts, too, are well worth exploring. A friend of mine took up bookbinding because his doctor ordered him to do something that would give him relaxation and activity without tension. It was a difficult challenge at first, but he gradually learned to square off the paper and the boards, sew the pages, fasten on the backstrip, and maintain precision and neatness throughout.
Within a few years, this initially rather dull hobby had led him into fresh fields of enjoyment. BHe began to collect fine books from the past five centuries;he developed an interest in printing;eventually, he started a private press and had the joy of producing his own elegant books. Many other crafts there are, and most of them contain one essential pleasure:the pleasure of making something that will last.

As for reading books, this contains two different delights. One is the pleasure of apprehending the unexpected, such as when one meets a new author who has a new vision of the world. The other pleasure is of deepening one"s knowledge of a special field.
Provided that you aim, throughout your life, as you continue learning, to integrate your thought, to make it harmonious. lf you happen to be an engineer and also enjoy singing in a glee club, connect these two activities. They unite in you;they are not in conflict. Both choral singing and engineering are examples of the architectonic ability of man:of his power to make a large plan and to convey it clearly to others. Both are esthetic and depend much on symmetry.Think about them not as though they were dissociated, but as though each were one aspect of a single unity. You will do them better, and be happier.
This is hard advice to give to young students. They are explosive, exploratory and insurrectionary.Instead of integrating their lives, they would rather seek outward, and even try to move in opposite directions simultaneously.
Much unhappiness has been suffered by those people who have never recognized that it is as necessary to make themselves into whole and harmonious personalities as to keep themselves clean, healthy and financially solvent. Wholeness of the mind and spirit is not a quality conferred by nature, or by God.It is like health, virtue and knowledge.
AMan has the capacity to attain it;but to achieve it depends on his own efforts. It needs a long, deliberate effort of the mind and the emotions, and even the body.
During our earthly life, the body gradually dies;even the emotions become duller. But the mind in most of us continues to live, and even grows more lively and active, enjoys itself more, works and plays with more expansion and delight.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Colleagues
Because I am the Vice-Chancellor of the oldest of the foreign universities represented here today, I have been chosen to speak on their behalf. I am pleased to be their voice in presenting our heartfelt congratulations to the professors, teachers, researchers and students of Peking University on the 100th anniversary of its foundation.
Our universities form a great intellectual community round the world. Science has no nationality;knowledge belongs to everyone.
Our universities create new knowledge. They teach this knowledge, together with that of other universities and also the best of the great storehouse of knowledge, which those who came before us have uncovered, tested and accumulated.
All universities contribute to the prosperity and success of their country. AThey also conserve the culture and inheritance specific to their country"s civilization. But, they do more.Knowledge is secure only when it is hard won by the independent tests of accuracy, rational explanation and truth. So, when we teach our students skills, we also give them values. On the one side, these are values for personal and civic conduct.BOn the other side, these values underwrite the personal need for independent understanding which is the source of human creativity.
These duties give universities a high responsibility. They are rooted in a great and fine tradition of honesty, free fearless enquiry and independence. Each university is a beacon of light in its own society and, by its association with its sisters, its knowledge and its values are spread wide.
A tradition is not built easily or quickly. During one hundred years, Peking University has been fashioning its tradition.Present and future members of the University! We hope to see you elaborate and consolidate your tradition. We hope to see you become a keystone of the intellectual community. In your next century, we hope to see you contribute to the international academic movement as a whole, as more and more of your numbers come to participate in the activities of your sister universities.

ABooks are to mankind what memory is to the individual. They contain the history of our race, the discoveries we have made, the accumulated knowledge and experience of ages;they picture for us the marvels and beauties of nature;help us in our difficulties, comfort us in sorrow and in suffering, change hours of weariness into moments of delight, store our minds with ideas, fill them with good and happy thoughts, and lift us out of and above ourselves.
There is an Oriental story of two men:one was a king, who every night dreamt he was a beggar;the other was a beggar, who every night dreamt he was a prince and lived in a palace. I am not sure that the king had very much the best of it.Imagination is sometimes more vivid than reality. But, however this may be, when we read we may not only(if we wish it)be kings and live in palaces, but, what is far better, we may transport ourselves to the mountains or the seashore, and visit the most beautiful parts of the earth, without fatigue, inconvenience, or expense.
Macaulay had wealth and fame, rank and power, and yet he owed the happiest hours of his life to books. ln a charming letter to a little girl, he says:“If any one would make me the greatest king that ever lived, with palaces and gardens and fine dinners, and wines and coaches, and beautiful clothes, and hundreds of servants, on condition that I should not read books, I would not be a king.I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who did not love reading.”
BPrecious and priceless are the blessings which the books scatter around our daily paths. We walk, in imagination, with the sublime and enchanting regions.Without stirring from our firesides we may roam to the most remote regions of the earth, or soar into realms where Spenser"s shapes of unearthly beauty flock to meet us, where Milton"s angels peal in our ears the choral hymns of Paradise.Science, art, literature, philosophy,-all that man has thought, all that man has done,-the experience that has been bought with the sufferings of a hundred generations,-all are garnered up for us in the world of books.

All the wisdom of the ages, all the stories that have delighted mankind for centuries, are easily and cheaply available in books-but we must know how to avail ourselves of this treasure and how to get the most from it.AThe most unfortunate people in the world are those who have never discovered how satisfying it is to read good books.
I am most interested in people, in meeting and finding out about them. Some of the most remarkable people I"ve met existed only in a writer"s imagination, then on the pages of his book, and then, again, in my imagination.I"ve found in books new friends, new societies, new worlds.
Reading is a pleasure of the mind, which means that it is a little like a sport:your eagerness and knowledge and quickness make you a good reader. BReading is fun, not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your mind work.Your own imagination works along with the author"s or even goes beyond his.Your experience, compared with his, brings you to the same or different conclusions, and your ideas develop as you understand his.
Every book stands by itself, like a one-family house, but books in a library are like houses in a city. Although they are separate, together they all add up to something;they are connected with each other and with other cities. The same ideas, or related ones, turn up in different places;the human problems that repeat themselves in life repeat themselves in literature, but with different solutions according to different writings at different times.Books influence each other;they link the past, the present and the future and have their own generations, like families.Wherever you start reading you connect yourself with one of the families of ideas and, in the long run, you not only find out about the world and the people in it;you find out about yourself, too.
Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. lf you concentrate on books somebody tells you you“ought”to read, you probably won"t have fun.But if you find one that means something to you, and then relax with it, you will almost certainly have a good time-and if you become, as a result of reading, better, wiser, kinder, or more gentle, you won"t have suffered during the process.
The most unfortunate people in the world are those who have never discovered how satisfying it is to read good books.

Mr.Whitson taught sixth-grade science. On the first day of class, he gave us a lecture about a creature called the cattywampus, an ill-adapted nocturnal animal that was wiped out during the lce Age.He passed around a skull as he talked. We all took notes and later had a quiz.
When he returned my paper, I was shocked. There was a big red X through each of my answers.I had failed. There had to be some mistake!I had written down exactly what Mr.Whitson said. Then I realized that everyone in the class had failed. What had happened?
We should have figured it out, Mr. Whitson said. After all, at the very moment he was passing around the cattywampus skull(in truth, a cat"s),hadn"t he been telling us that no trace of the animal remained? He had described its amazing night vision, the color of its fur and any number of other facts he couldn"t have known.AHe had given the animal a ridiculous name, and we still hadn"t been suspicious. The zeroes on our papers would be recorded in his grade book, he said. And they were.
Mr. Whitson said he hoped we would learn something from this experience.Teachers and textbooks are not infallible. In fact, no one is.He told us not to let our minds go to sleep, and to speak up if we ever thought he or the textbook was wrong.

There is a lot of misunderstanding about studying. Most students have not been taught the principles behind really effective working.Imagine a graph showing the amount a person learns against the number of hours he works in a day.If he doesn"t do any work, he learns nothing. If he does an hour"s work he learns a certain amount. If he does two hours"work he learns about twice as much.If he does more work he"ll learn still more. Now, it he tried to do 23 1/2 hours"work in 24,he"ll be so exhausted that he"ll hardly remember anything:what he learns will be very little. If he did less work he"d learn more.
The skill in being a student consists in getting one"s daily study as near the optimum point as possible. I cannot tell you what the optimum is.It differs with the type of work, A it differs from person to person, and even in the same person it varies from week to week. You must try to find your own.Every day you study, bear this principle of the optimum in mind. When you feel yourself getting fatigued, if you find yourself repeatedly reading over the same paragraph and not taking it in, that"s a pretty good sign you"ve reached the crest for the day and should stop.
Now, what are you doing with yourself when you aren"t working? Before examinations some students do nothing at all except sit in a chair and worry. Here is another misunderstanding.People too easily think of the mind as if it worked like the body, it does not.The mind is always turning.BIt gets its relaxation only by variety. That is what makes mental rest.
When you"ve finished your optimum hourage you must stop. You must not then sit around in the chair thinking about the work-that only tires without any learning. You must get out and do something. It doesn"t matter what-anything so long as you are actively doing something else but work.

Of all the areas of learning the most important is the development of attitudes.Emotional reactions as well as logical thought processes affect the behavior of most people.
“The burnt child fears the fire”is one instance;another is the rise of figures like Hitler. Both these examples also point up the fact that attitudes come from experience. In the one case the experience is direct and impressive, in the other it is indirect and gradual.
The classroom teacher in the elementary school is in strategic position to influence attitudes. This is true partly because children acquire attitudes from those adults whose words they respect.
AAnother reason why it is true is that pupils often search somewhat deeply into a subject in school that has only been touched upon at home or has possibly never occurred to them before. To a child who had previously acquired little knowledge of Mexico, his teacher"s method of handling such a unit would greatly affect his attitude toward Mexicans.
The teacher can develop proper attitudes through social studies, science matters, the very atmosphere of the classroom, etc. However, when children come to school with undesirable attitudes, it is unwise to attempt to change their feelings by criticizing them. The teacher can achieve the proper effect by helping them obtain constructive experience.
To illustrate, first-grade pupils, afraid of policemen will probably change their attitudes after a classroom talk with the neighborhood officer in which he explains how he protects them. ln the same way, a class of older children can develop attitudes through discussion, research and all-day trips.
Finally, a teacher must constantly evaluate his own attitudes, because his influence can be harmful if he has personal prejudices.
BThis is especially true in respect to controversial issues and questions of which children should be encouraged to reach their own conclusion as result of objective analysis of all the facts.

Today the academy holds a highly privileged place in American society because of a long-standing national consensus about the value of education. One of my predecessors, President Harold Dodds, said in his inaugural address in 1933 that“No country spends money for education, public and private, so lavishly as does the United States.Americans have an almost childlike faith in what formal education can do for them.”That faith is based on a conviction that the vitality of the United States, its creative and diverse cultural life, its staggeringly inventive economy, its national security and the robustness of its democratic institutions owe much to the quality of its institutions of higher education.
AOur society"s confidence in its institutions of higher education is expressed through the generous investments of the federal and state governments in basic and applied research, investments that wisely couple support for research with support for graduate education. It is also expressed through federal and state investments that subsidize the cost of higher education for those who cannot afford to pay, investments by private foundations and charities who see universities as the best routes for achieving their strategic goals, and investments by individuals and by the private sector, who see universities as the incubators of future health and prosperity. In return for this broad support, society rightfully expects certain things from us.It expects the generation of new ideas and the discovery of new knowledge, the exploration of complex issues in an open and collegial manner and the preparation of the next generation of citizens and leaders. In times of trouble, it is especially important that we live up to these expectations.
BThe medieval image of the university as an ivory tower, with scholars turned inward in solitary contemplation, immunized from the cares of the day, is an image that has been superseded by the modern university constructed not of ivory, but of a highly porous material, one that allows free diffusion in both directions. The academy is of the world, not apart from it.

The search for new ideas and knowledge is not and cannot be motivated by utilitarian concerns.ARather it depends on the ability to think in new and creative ways, to challenge prevailing orthodoxies, to depart from the status quo.We must continually strive to preserve the freedom of our students and our scholars to pursue ideas that conflict with what we believe or what we would like to believe, and to explore deep problems whose solutions have no apparent applications. This is not a privilege we grant to a handful of pampered intellectuals;rather it is a defining feature of our society and an essential investment in the continuing strength of our character, our culture, our ideas and our material lives. We have learned that we cannot predict with any accuracy how discoveries and scholarship will influence future generations. We also have learned that it is unwise to search only in predictable places, for new knowledge often depends upon preparing fertile ground in obscure places where serendipity and good luck, as well as deep intelligence, can sprout.Freedom of inquiry, which is one of our most cherished organizing principles, is not just a moral imperative, it is a practical necessity.
BJust as we have an obligation to search widely for knowledge, so we also have an obligation to insure that the scholarly work of the academy is widely disseminated, so that others can correct it when necessary, or build on it, or use it to make better decisions, develop better products or construct better plans. ln the days ahead, I hope that our country"s decision makers will draw on the knowledge that resides on our campuses, on historians who can inform the present through deep understanding of the past, philosophers who can provide frameworks for working through issues of right and wrong, economists whose insights can help to get the economy back on track, engineers who know how to build safer buildings, scientists who can analyze our vulnerabilities to future attack and develop strategies for reducing those vulnerabilities, and scholars in many fields who can help them understand the motivations of those who would commit acts of terrorism here and throughout the world.

Let me now turn to the third obligation that we have to society:the education of the next generation of citizens and leaders.Princeton"s view of what constitutes a liberal arts education was expressed well by Woodrow Wilson, whose eloquent words I read at Opening Exercises:A“What we should seek to impart in our colleges, is not so much learning itself as the spirit of learning. It consists in the power to distinguish good reasoning from bad, in the power to digest and interpret evidence, in the habit of catholic observation and a preference for the non-partisan point of view, in an addiction to clear and logical processes of thought and yet an instinctive desire to interpret rather than to stick to the letter of reasoning, in a taste for knowledge and a deep respect for the integrity of the human mind.”
Wilson, and the presidents who followed him, rejected the narrow idea of a liberal arts education as preparation for a profession. While understanding the importance of professional education, they made it clear that at Princeton we should first and foremost cultivate the qualities of thought and discernment in our students, in the belief that this will be most conducive to the health of our society.BThus we distinguish between the acquisition of information, something that is essential for professional training, and the development of habits of mind that can be applied in any profession.Consequently we celebrate when the classics scholar goes to medical school, the physicist becomes a member of Congress, or the historian teaches primary school. If we do our job well as educators, each of our students will take from a Princeton education a respect and appreciation for ideas and values, intellectual openness and rigor, practice in civil discourse and a sense of civic responsibility.During these troubled times, our students and our alumni will be called upon to exercise these qualities in their professions, their communities and their daily lives.By so doing, and through their leadership, their vision and their courage, they will help to fulfill Princeton"s obligation to society and bring true meaning to our motto,“Princeton in the nation"s service and in the service of all nations.”

Going to college! What a thrill! It"s a trip that has everything great that you have heard about. It also is very serious business. To a great extent, you will be on your own.True, there are an awful lot of people ready to help you, but generally you must take the initiative and seek them out.
AMost of you have decided on a career. Even though many of you will change your minds later, the initial decision allows you to set class goals and pursue them step by step toward the final objective of graduation.Such goals are essential for success. In advising students, I always tell them to discipline themselves, to be prepared to study hard and keep up from day one.
BToday"s world is full of precious knowledge, whether it be in the arts, literature, a profession, or a vocational skill. College is your chance of a lifetime to explore these areas. Each facet can be as exciting when discovered by you as it was when discovered by the original author or explorer.Let yourself explore beyond your immediate career objectives.A student in auto-mechanics in most schools also can take courses in history, philosophy, music, or art. There is no reason that a craftsman can"t be a great thinker, or an explorer into the vast areas of unlimited knowledge.
Also consider this—are you going to take a course to learn or are you going to take it only to have it on your record?Get into the subjects in great depth to gain a true understanding. Don"t be content to just skim over courses with‘only to pass’in mind.By taking the in-depth approach you will be exploring many of the disciplines you will enjoy the rest of your life.
The person doing an honest piece of work, the work one can be proud of, is the truly happy person. The agony of just getting by will eventually tear one asunder. The habit of honest work and pride in your work can be established to a great extent in college.
Thus, as you stand on the threshold of your college career, commit yourself and stand by that commitment. From the first day in class, discipline yourself to make learning fun, not a chore, and to get the most from the educational opportunities open to you.

Peace of mind is something I think about every day. It"s great to have confidence when stepping out my front door that I will be able to move around the local environment without fear and return home safely. But peace of mind depends on mutual trust from every citizen—that as we walk the streets and conduct our personal affairs we hold the same basic views and values about maintaining a civil society.
Every time a violent crime or terrorist act is perpetrated on unsuspecting victims, when a sniper starts shooting or a bomb explodes, our collective peace of mind is eroded, along with our willingness to trust all the unknown people with whom we share sidewalks, shopping malls, and other public spaces.

As an executive agent, I manage the careers of senior executives, many of them in tech industries, and I"m often privy to their most trying professional challenges. From my vantage point, I"ve seen some new rules emerge for job hunters.
1.The Rule of Ten:All hiring executives have at least 10 friends out of work.So if you needed a reminder about the importance of building and maintaining your professional network, this is it.Get onto as many“lists of 10”as possible.
2.Square pegs for square holes:Back in the days of the talent shortage, companies often hired people into jobs with relatively little experience for that particular task. Now hiring managers can choose from candidates whose professional experience is exactly 100 percent relevant for the position. It"s not a good time to switch careers.
3.It"s easier to be acquired than hired:The old wisdom was“Just get your foot in the door.”But even that"s not easy now, since companies have the luxury of taking long, hard looks at candidates before hiring them. One solution:develop some kind of business relationship with the company, such as pitching deals that are low-risk, high-reward for them.AConsulting, once considered the last option for a corporate executive on the job market, has now become an avenue to getting hired.

AIf I were a boy again, I would practise perseverance oftener, and never give up a thing because it was hard or inconvenient. If we want light, we must conquer darkness.Perseverance can sometimes equal genius in its results.“There are only two creatures,”says a proverb,“who can surmount the pyramids——the eagle and the snail.”
If I were a boy again, I would school myself into a habit of attention;I would let nothing come between me and the subject in hand. I would remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once.I often hear grown-up people say“I could not fix my attention on the sermon or book, although I wished to do so”,and the reason is, the habit was not formed in youth.
If I were to live my life over again, I would pay more attention to the cultivation of the memory. I would strengthen that faculty by every possible means, and on every possible occasion. It only needs early cultivation to become a power.
If I were a boy again, I would cultivate courage. We too often borrow trouble, and anticipate evils that may never appear.“The fear of ill exceeds the ill we fear.”Be prepared for any fate, and there is no harm to be feared.
If I were a boy again, I would look on the cheerful side. Life is very much like a mirror:if you smile upon it, it smiles back upon you;but if you frown and look doubtful on it, you will get a similar look in return.Inner sunshine warms not only the heart of the owner, but of all that come in contact with it.“Who shuts love out, in turn shall be shut from love.”
BIf I were a boy again, I would school myself to say“No”oftener. lf I were a boy again, I would demand of myself more courtesy towards my companions and friends, and indeed towards strangers as well. The smallest courtesies along the rough roads of life are like the little birds that sing to us all winter long, and make that season of ice and snow more endurable.

It is, perhaps, no accident that many of the outstanding figures of the past were exceptionally versatile men.Right up until comparatively recent times, it was possible for an intelligent person to acquaint himself with almost every branch of knowledge.AThus, men of genius like Leonardo da Vinci or Sir Philip Sidney engaged in many careers at once as a matter of course.Da Vinci was so busy with his numerous inventions, that he barely found the time to complete his paintings;Sidney, was not only a great soldier, but a brilliant scholar and poet as well. Both these men came very near to fulfilling the Renaissance ideal of the“universal man”,the man who was proficient at everything.
Today, we rarely, if ever, hear that a musician has just invented a new type of submarine. Knowledge has become divided and sub-divided into countless, narrowly-defined compartments. The specialist is venerated;the versatile person, far from being admired, is more often regarded with suspicion. The modern world is a world of highly-skilled“experts”who have had to devote the greater part of their lives to a very limited field of study in order to compete with their fellows.
With this high degree of specialization, the frontiers of knowledge are steadily being pushed back more rapidly than ever before. But this has not been achieved without considerable cost.BThe scientist, who outside his own particular subject is little more than a moron, is a modern phenomenon;as is the man of letters who is barely aware of the tremendous strides that have been made in technology.Similarly, specialization has indirectly affected quite ordinary people in every walk of life. Many activities which were once pursued for their own sakes are often given up in despair:they require techniques, the experts tell us, which take a life-time to master.
Little by little, we are becoming more and more isolated from each other. It is almost impossible to talk to your neighbor about his job, even if he is engaged in roughly the same work as you are.The Royal Society in Britain includes among its members only the most eminent scientists in the country.Yet it is highly disconcerting to find that even here, as one of its Fellows put it, at a lecture only 10%of the members can understand 50%of what is being said!

Over dinner a few weeks ago, the novelist Lawrence Naumoff told a troubling story. He asked students in his introduction to creative writing course at UNC-Chapel Hill if they had read Jack Kerouac.Nobody raised a hand. Then he asked if anyone had ever heard of Jack Kerouac.More blank expressions.
Naumoff began describing the legend of the literary wild man. One student offered that he had a teacher who was just as crazy.Naumoff asked the professor"s name. The student said he didn"t know.Naumoff then asked this oblivious scholar,“Do you know my name?”
After a long pause, the young man replied,“No.”
“I guess I"ve always known that many students are just taking my course to get a requirement out of the way,”Naumoff said. A“But it was disheartening to see that some couldn"t even go to the trouble of finding out the name of the person teaching the course.”
The fioodgates were opened and the other UNC professors at the dinner began sharing their own dispiriting stories about the troubling state of curiosity on campus.
But in the past, ignorance tended to be a source of shame and motivation. Students were far more likely to be troubled by not-knowing, far more eager to fill such gaps by learning. As one of my reviewers once said,”It"s not that they don"t know, but that they don"t care about what they don"t know.”
BIn fairness, the assault on high culture and tradition that has transpired since the 1960s has paid great dividends, bringing long overdue attention to marginalized voices.
Unfortunately, this new freedom has sucker punched the notion of the educated person who is esteemed not because of the size of his bank account or the extent of his fame but the depth of his knowledge. lnstead of a mainstream reverence for those who produce or appreciate works that represent the summit of human achievement, we have a corporatized and commodified culture that hypes the latest trend, the next new thing.
A fundamental truth about people is that they are shaped by the world around them. ln the here and now, get-the-job-done environment of modern America, the knowledge for knowledge"s sake ethos that is the foundation of a liberal arts education——and of a rich and satisfying life——has been shoved to the margins.Curiously, in a world where everything is worth knowing, nothing is.

At the recent Forbes Global CEO Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, my colleague Tim Ferguson, editor of Forbes Asia, led a panel on leadership. What struck me-and not for the first time-is the variety of leadership styles that work. And work really well. There is no single leadership secret;there are many. They are hiding in plain sight, and we can learn from them.
Visionary
One of the panelists was Helmut Panke, former chairman of German automaker BMW. As auto executives go, Panke was a late bloomer. He came to BMW as head of planning and control in 1982.Panke rose to become chairman of BMW"s management board in 2002 and there fulfilled his goal of BMW"s becoming the biggest seller of luxury automobiles, overtaking Mercedes.
Panke says leadership is chiefly about vision. Apple"s Steve Jobs and Whole Foods"John Mackey are examples of visionary business leaders today. For them, vision, product integrity and brand will always be one and the same.
Empathetic
Another leadership style is that driven by empathy. ACorporate America is replete with great empathetic leaders.Bill Hewlett, cofounder of Hewlett-Packard, was a legendary one.He liked to roll up his sleeves and inspire engineers by walking the floors and listening to their concerns.Empathetic leadership under founder Herb Kelleher and current CEO Gary Kelly is the reason that Southwest Airlines even today has some of the happiest flight attendants in the skies.
Humble Servitude
Wal-Mart Chairman S. Robson Walton"s secret is that he does not pretend to be Sam Walton, who founded Wal-Mart in 1962.Sam was an archetypal entrepreneur.Rob chooses to be the humble-servant leader.Under Rob Walton"s leadership his company has listened well-even to its many critics-and prospered.
Moral/Ethical
An insistence on companywide ethical behavior-i. e.,every employee practicing the Golden Rule in all company dealings-can be a powerful form of leadership.BBut it is also a fragile form, subject to human frailty. One mistake and a moral/ethical leader can easily look like a hypocrite.
In the U. S.such companies as S.C.Johnson, Deere&;Co.,American Express and Starbucks have done well by doing good.
There are many more leadership styles beyond these four. lf there"s any secret to leadership, it is“fit.”Leadership style must fit the leader, and it must fit the organization.

Burning the midnight oil before an exam or interview is counterproductive according to research which found that sleep is necessary for memories to be downloaded into the brain.
A good night"s sleep within 30 hours of trying to remember a new task is a prerequisite of having good recall in the weeks ahead, scientists have found.
The research, published in the December issue of Nature Neuroscience, showed that it was the act of sleep, rather than the simple passage of time, that was critical for long-term memory formation.
“It seems that memories normally wash out of the brain unless some process nails them down. My suspicion is that sleep is one of those things that does the nailing down,”said Professsor Stickgold, a sleep researcher at Harvard Medical School who conducted the latest study.
Volunteers in an experiment found it easier to remember a memory task if they were allowed to sleep that night. But for those kept awake, no amount of subsequent sleep made up for the initial loss.
Professor Stickgold"s team trained the 24 people to identify the orientation of three diagonal bars flashed for a sixtieth of a second on a computer screen full of horizontal stripes.
AHalf the subjects were kept awake that night, while the other half slept. Both groups were allowed to sleep for the second and the third nights to make up for any differences in tiredness between the volunteers. Those who slept the first night were significantly and consistently better at remembering the task while the second group showed no improvement despite enjoying two nights of catch-up sleep.
A further study by scientists in Germany showed that memories are laid down in two stages during the night. The first is during the deep, so-called“slow wave”sleep, which usually occurs in the first half of the night. The second and less important stage occurs during periods of dreaming, or“rapid eye movement”.BWhen people are sleep-deprived in the first half of the night, their memory consolidation is almost the same as having no sleep at all.Being deprived of REM sleep was not found to be so detrimental for memory recall but was important in terms of implicit learning, when performance is not relying solely on the ability to remember.
The scientists concluded that a good night"s sleep, with both slow-wave and REM sleep produced the best intellectual performances among their volunteers.

When I came to the farm as a bride, the rock was there, just around the corner of the house. It was an ugly dull orange, about a foot in diameter, and stuck up a couple of inches through the back lawn waiting to trip me.

“No, it"s always been there,”my husband said.“It goes down pretty deep, I reckon.”My father-in-law added.“My wife"s family has lived here since the Civil War. No one"s ever got it out.”
So it stayed. My children were born, grew up and went away.My father-in-law died. Some time later, my husband died.

Five minutes later the rock was out, about a foot deep, and maybe six inches wider than it looked from the top.

Simplicity is an uprightness of soul that has no reference to self;it is different from sincerity, and it is a still higher virtue. We see many people who are sincere, without being simple;they only wish to pass for what they are, and they are unwilling to appear what they are not;they are always thinking of themselves, measuring their words, and recalling their thoughts, and reviewing their actions, from the fear that they have done too much or too little. These persons are sincere, but they are not simple;……they are not free, ingenuous, natural;we prefer people who are less correct, less perfect, and who are less artificial. This is the decision of man, and it is the judgment of God, who would not have us so occupied with ourselves, and thus, as it were, always arranging our features in a mirror.
ATo be wholly occupied with others, never to look within, is the state of blindness of those who are entirely engrossed by what is present and addressed to their senses;this is the very reverse of simplicity. To be absorbed in self and in whatever engages us, whether we are laboring for our fellow beings or for God——to be wise in our own eyes reserved, and full of ourselves, troubled at the least thing that disturbs our self-complacency, is the opposite extreme. This is false wisdom, which, with all its glory, is but little less absurd than folly, which pursues only pleasure. The one is intoxicated with all it sees around it;the other with all that it imagines it has within;but it is delirium in both.To be absorbed in the contemplation of our own minds is really worse than to be engrossed by outward things, because it appears like wisdom and yet is not, we do not think of curing it, we pride ourselves upon it, we approve of it, it gives us an unnatural strength, it is a sort of frenzy, we are not conscious of it, we are dying, and we think ourselves in health.
BSimplicity consists in a just medium, in which we are neither too much excited, nor too composed. That freedom of the soul, which looks straight onward in its path, losing no time to reason upon its steps, to study them, or to contemplate those that it has already taken, is true simplicity.

Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability.Their chief use for delight, is in privateness and retiring;for ornament, is in discourse;and for ability, is in the judgment, and disposition of business. For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one;but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs, come best from those that are learned. To spend too much time in studies is sloth;to use them too much for ornament, is affectation;to make judgment wholly by their rules, is the humor of a scholar.
They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience:for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need pruning by study;and studies themselves, do give forth directions too much at large, except they be bounded in by experience. ACrafty men contemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them;for they teach not their own use;but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation.Read not to contradict and confute;nor to believe and take for granted;nor to find talk and discourse;but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.
Reading makes a full man;conference a ready man;and writing an exact man. And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory;if he confer little, he had need have a present wit;and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know that he doth not.BHistories make men wise;poets witty;the mathematics subtle;natural philosophy deep;moral grave;logic and rhetoric able to contend. So if a man"s wit be wandering, let him study the mathematics;for in demonstrations, if his wit be called away never so little, he must begin again. If his wit be not apt to distinguish or find differences, let him study the schoolmen;for they are cymini sectores. If he be not apt to beat over matters, and to call up one thing to prove and illustrate another, let him study the lawyers"cases. So every defect of the mind may have a special receipt.

When you keep your promises, no matter how much effort it takes, you will be rewarded.Whenever you say no, stand behind that as well.In a way, a no is also a promise.A good, clean no can be very important in building trust.People feel safest when they know what is expected, what they can and cannot do.Agreements are also important.Whenever you enter an agreement, live by it.Even if after making the agreement you"re not too happy with the deal, you still live by it.AIn the long run, your integrity will pay off. This all boils down to an issue of integrity. You need to have the integrity to make your word gold.Integrity comes from your very core. When you keep your word, confidence resonates from your very being.People respond.
Victoria was hired as general manager of an entertainment megastore. She understood the technical side of the business, so there was no question about what needed to be done to run the store. It was in personnel management that she knew she had to pay special attention. She decided on one simple rule:“Make your word gold”.
Victoria set out to do that with a vengeance. She was very careful, however, of not overpromising. When she did, she moved mountains to make sure that she came through. After a while, the store employees came to trust and respect her like no manager they had ever had.The teamwork became magical.People followed her example. They started to live up to their word.BVictoria also went to great lengths to carry out all her agreements, even if they weren"t formally labeled as promises.
On those rare occasions when it was just impossible to do, she would go back to the employee and renegotiate another agreement. The new agreement became her highest priority. That did not reduce her respect.People understood she was very good about giving clear yes or no answers. She meant what she said, and people appreciated that.

Happy is the man who acquires the habit of reading when he is young. He has secured a life-long source of pleasure, instruction, and inspiration. So long as he has his beloved books, he need never feel lonely. He always has a pleasant occupation of leisure moments, so that he need never feel bored. He is the possessor of wealth more precious than gold.Ruskin calls books,“King"s Treasures”treasuries filled, not with gold and silver and precious stones, but riches much more valuable than these knowledge, noble thoughts and high ideals.Poor indeed is the man who does not read, and empty is his life.
The blessings which the reading habit confers on its possessor are many. Provided we choose the right kind of books, reading gives us the highest kind of pleasure. Some books we read simply for pleasure and amusement for example, good novels. And novels and books of imagination must have their place in everybody"s reading. When we are tired, or the brain is weary with serious study, it is a healthy recreation to loose ourselves in some absorbing story written by a master hand.
But to read nothing but books of fiction is like eating nothing but cakes and sweetmeats. AAs we need plain, wholesome food for the body, so we must have serious reading for the mind. And here we can choose according to our taste and interest. There are many noble books on history, arts, literature, biography, philosophy, religion, travel and science which we ought to read accordingly, and which will give us not only pleasure but an education. And we can develop a taste for serious reading, so that in the end it will give us more solid pleasure than even novels and books of fiction.Nor should poetry be neglected, for the best poetry gives us noble thoughts and beautiful imaginings, clothed in lovely and musical language.
Books are the most faithful of friends. Our friends may change, or die;but our books are always waiting patiently to talk to us.BThey are never cross, peevish, or unwilling to converse, as our friends sometimes are.No wonder a reader becomes a“book-lover.”

I am a pushy parent and proud of it.Parents such as I may be an irritant to universities, but I am convinced we should accompany our offspring to university open days because we can make a difference to their futures. How?By being older, wiser and asking embarrassing questions.
By going to open days, parents and their children can gauge the culture of the institution, check out the buildings and facilities, assess academic standards, get the measure of the current students and compare notes afterwards. The differences were enormous, which is something you can"t really find out just by reading prospectuses, surfing university websites, or by osmosis.Nothing beats seeing for yourself.
If my son had chosen a university based on his own youthful agenda, he would have gone to the one with the prettiest girls and the highest ratio of girls to boys(Surrey). High on his list of priorities were also good food, cheap student-union beer, a friendly, laid-back atmosphere, nightlife, plush halls of residence and a low cost of living.
While not disputing the importance of any of these, I had a different agenda:academic standards and reputation, impressiveness of the academic staff, league-table position, overall status and ease of getting a good job afterwards. Universities often say students should above all else choose an institution on the basis of a course they really want to study.
ABut it"s a case of horses for courses. How one university teaches a particular subject may be very different from the way another one does.It is only by going to open days that you can work this out for yourself.
Perhaps most importantly of all, by going to open days parents can sometimes find out things that may make the difference between their son or daughter getting in and not getting in to their chosen university. How?By asking questions that some teenagers might not think of asking.
Typically, the questions students asked were about workload, number of essays, frequency of lectures and job prospects. But at an Oxford open day, a typical question from a parent was:B“How can students mess up an interview?”
Armed with the answers to these questions, applicants are better able to prepare. Then it"s down to them. And, of course, they deserve(almost)all the credit when they get in.

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to be so successful in life?Whatever they touch turns to gold. They are the lucky ones with the great job, great salary, perfect love, and ideal life. You may have found yourself thinking,“Why them, and not me.”
One reason for success is the ability to make correct choices, and decisions. Successful people do that consistently. It is based on information that goes far beyond what is learned and involves accessing accurate information from seemingly nowhere. This ability is intuition and highly successful people enjoy a higher degree of intuition than the average person.AWhere most people base their decision making only on their accumulated knowledge, successful people combine all they have learned together with what they sense with their intuition.Their ability to gather information is way ahead of the rest.
Everybody is intuitive, but not everybody trusts their intuition when it comes to making decisions. Even today, there are those who are afraid of their clairvoyant abilities. They have many misconceptions about clairvoyance, think it"s taboo, and something to suppress.Others believe they have it, have had experiences with it, but never knew it could be a valuable tool for problem solving.
Intuition is actually a skill that can be developed and applied effectively for improving all areas of life. Like reading, intuition can be developed through time.No one is born knowing how to read;yet almost everyone has the potential of learning how to read. When very young, we were taught the letters of the alphabet, and then the sounds those letters represented. As time went by, the more we read the more skillful we became at reading.BWith intuition, the more you understand, and use your intuition, the stronger it becomes. Some people seem to have more intuition than others. It"s probably because they had positive experiences with it as they were growing up, and are now more comfortable with using it.
Having a keen sense of intuition is desirable in every area of your life, and although many people don"t advertise their intuitive ability openly in fear of being ridiculed, they use it all the time. Every person can benefit from having, and using, intuition. To be able to make correct choices and decisions in family, relationships, and business can add a tremendous advantage in life.
