    That exhausted and tragic smile touched on millions of people.

    We will remember the name, Luo Yang！

    Stepping down onto the vast landscape of Shenyang together with journalists from the Chinese Writers Association, we came to look for Luo Yang, to search for that little smile that had moved the nation……

    The third big snow after winter had arrived to Shenyang, and many of the locals were saying that the snows too had come in to see Luo Yang, and were now mourning as they departed……

    Amongst the endless snow, taxis passed before us one after another, banners with writing on them billowing in the wind，“Luo Yang, we are proud of you！”“Farewell Luo Yang！”

    In the colourful, fast changing pace of the days, can we pause for one moment and look again upon the tragic death of Luo Yang?

    “Luo Yang, the nation is proud of you！”

    “Luo Yang's spirit is immortal！”

    “Empty words harm the nation；full work brings prosperity！”

    Only hours after Luo Yang's death, and before officials had the time to react, passionate voices had swept across the internet. Within the vast virtual congregation of the internet, diverse opinions and differences will always arise, but following the sudden departure of Luo Yang, all were united in feelings of shock, regret and mourning.

    As of 11：00 on the 26th of November, less than one day after the news of Luo Yang's death, more than 240，000 people on Sina Web-log had clicked on and discussed the topic of“Luo Yang's departure”. Amongst the top hot topics that day, over 2，000 Web-log users had posted moving eulogies for Luo Yang, and People.cn's Qiangguo Forum and Tencent's netizens had posted surging wave after wave of commemoration.Following that, Xinhua News Agency, CCTV, the People's Daily's official Web-log account, China Aviation News'official microblogging and others quickly posted relevant articles.

    Owing to the great concern felt by Party and State leaders, on the second day after Luo Yang's death General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Central Military Commission Chairman Xi Jinping made the following important instructions：

    “Due to Comrade Luo Yang's unfortunate death in the line of duty, I would like to centre my deepest condolences and express my sympathy to his family. Comrade Luo Yang upheld our national aviation sector, and made tremendous contributions to the development of China's aviation industry.His untimely death is a great loss to the Party and the country.We must summarize and publicize the good deeds of Comrade Luo Yang.I call on our Party members and cadres to learn from the excellent qualities and worthy spirit of Comrade Luo Yang.His family must also be properly taken care of.”

    We must not complain that there is no longer courage in our nation. We must not complain that our communities lack spirit.

    Luo Yang's death was noticed by the entire society, a stark contrast with his quiet hidden life away from the limelight.

    Although the unveiling of China's own developed aircraft carrier had given people great pride and happiness, at the very moment of its ultimate success, the pioneer behind it left. The people both admired and praised his ambition to serve the nation's aviation, his willpower and perseverance, his diligence and dedication of character, but were also full of sorrow that he could not be present during the national rejoicing.They raised their glasses to toast the success, but he was absent.

    A foreign news agency reported，“Beijing attached great importance to the project, as the project is regarded as China's rise within the past 30 years from a poor country to an economic power.”

    Indeed, Luo Yang has become a symbol of that spirit！

    After his death, Shenyang Corporation Party Committee Secretary, Vice Chairman Xie Genhua wrote these paragraphs in his recollection article The Loss of Luo Yang：

    How could you leave like so?My good partner, my good colleague, my friend, my good brother—Luo Yang. Even now, I still can not believe it！On the 18th of November you flew to the Liaoning Ship by helicopter, and we had less than one hour turnaround time before I had to take the chopper back ashore.I had already been on the ship for more than 10 days, so I took you to the living quarters, to show you the boiler room, kitchen, bathroom and washroom, to show you how to use the telephone for civil service, then the telephone and room numbers of the various participating leaders and comrades.Then I showed you the ship's infrastructure and flight preparations, the Shenyang aviation video capturing equipment onboard and how to find the camera operators, where regular and aviation headquarters meetings would be convened, where the drinks were kept in your room, and location of the fruits and food storage.

    I would never have expected that this trivial conversation was to become our last. Boarding the ship deck, we watched the day's flight training, which turned out to have left behind valued videos and pictures of the two of us with the team behind.Afterwards, I went to Dalian Harbour to meet you and the team onshore, to toast and celebrate with a banquet.

    In the next few days, the aircraft carrier had completed all of its tasks, and our aviation industry had completed a most important event. The development of combat aircraft for China was also of major symbolic significance, and we were indeed immersed in a sea of joy.

    However, on the 24th of November, you had a very long and painful night. Under excessive fatigue, the plane carrying you took off, and in the huge roar of the engine, your heart experienced a brutal shock.At the start it was angina.Yet you were strong, and would never want to add the slightest trouble to others, so you silently endured the pain.The clock was ticking now, and you felt that time was running slowly.It was to be a tough night……

    Xie Genhua gave a special report on Luo Yang for writers and journalists.

    “In my mind, Luo Yang is a true hero, not content to just build one J-15 and then lay down to rest.”Xie Genhua said，“As General Manager of Shenyang Aviation Corporation over the past five years, most of his great energy was devoted to the development of multiple types of fighter jet, many as complex as the J-15. The only difference is that the risk was greater with the J-15 aircraft.Luo Yang's management was superb；he was very good at managing multiple models, where resources would be paired appropriately.It all depended on the time and circumstances of the case, and only with their reasonable allocation would the successful completion of each task be ensured.”

    Luo Yang would often emphasize during meetings on his“One generation of equipment, One generation of management”concept. In the context of upgrading the products, he creatively put forward the“four modernizations”（work targets, work standardization, workflow systemization and work data evaluation of data）.

    Since then, Luo Yang's“Management of the Four Modernizations”has constantly enriched us. It has played a significant guiding role in Shenyang Corporation's continuously improving management innovation system.

    Luo Yang was often known to say，“We must find a way.”For fighter models that were more difficult, he would meet with the team members responsible for the allocation of resources where the fighter was being developed. As for Luo Yang, it was essential that many models be completed, the only difference amongst those models was the respective dates of operation and trial.From 2009 to 2012，Shenyang Corporation made a series of successful maiden flights, essentially keeping to the planned time.The key to these successes was for Luo Yang's“find a way”.

    As an ideologist, Luo Yang held a very senior position. Not only from the point of view of his position at Shenyang Corporation, but also through his standing in the entire aviation industry and even the national aeronautics industry.He has said，“If a country does not have long-term weapons support, sooner or later it will be vulnerable to attack.The Qing Sino-Japanese War defeat was due to the fact that we did not have a strong industrial base, only a few warships in total.Everything would at once be lost by a Japanese attack, and left how could we defeat an enemy attack with no equipment?”

    “Report to Chief Commander, I am Aircraft[CLASSIFIED]Research and Development Chief Field Commander. Aircraft prepared, in good condition, requesting take-off！”

    Such exciting first flight reports would previously occur about every eight to ten years by Shenyang Corporation. But within four days of October and November this year alone, Luo Yang reported two“first flight”reports.

    Xie Genhua said emotionally，“How much we would like to hear Luo Yang's reports again！As the representative of aviation personnel, Luo Yang was reporting to the motherland and the people！”

    Through video's we see the passionate scenes：the new model offaircraft parked next to the runway, Luo Yang walked with confident pace to the podium, to report to the Commander of the China aircraft industry：

    “Report to Commander, I am No.[CLASSIFIED]model aircraft Research and Development Field Commander, aircraft prepared, in good condition, requesting take-off！”

    The Commander then issued the“take off”command.

    The aircraft slowly rolled forwards, increasing speed and pulling up, just like an arrow fired up into the sky！

    At this time, Luo Yang could be seen looking up into the sky, his face filled with excitement and pride.

    When I call you a hero，

    Do you hear，

    Do not go too far away from here；

    When I call you a hero，

    I

    burst into tears，

    My arms now wings, soaring dreams into the blue sky……

    After Luo Yang's departure, when the Corporation's working personnel sang this song My Hero, their minds were not only rippling with tragedy, but now also full of supreme respect and warmth. After entering into the military-industrial complex, and over a few days of interviews, I found that the personnel here did not wear uniforms but they were still a highly organized and disciplined team of troops.Each time they worked on a different model, they organized a separate campaign.Because of this, these aviation personnel worked a“711”system—seven days a week, working 11 hours a day.During the most stressful times, it would turn to“724”—no rest days，24 hours, day and night.

    Whilst facing me during an interview, Shenyang Aircraft Design Institute Zhao Min shed tears，“When Luo Yang stepped down from the Liaoning and waved at me, he was so full of the passion and vitality……and then he is just gone……”

    As for the J-15s, the Shenyang Aircraft Design Institute was its designer, and Shenyang Aircraft Corporation producer, but they faced the pressure together.

    Zhao Min said，“In a way, Luo Yang and his Shenyang Aircraft Corporation had much bigger pressure than all oflour previous work during the first flight simulation. Simulation does not directly face all kinds of tests from the actual environment.Ground testing can not completely simulate the sky environment.Therefore, the first flight usually faces very real and huge risks, including the J-15's landing.Everything relies on this test.Of course, during a successful maiden flight, we will be particularly excited, experiencing an uneasy joy about the whole process.However, the next day, and then on the third day, we fly again, and the pressure again begins.”

    I asked，“Before the flight of the J-15's, what were you most nervous about?”

    “Before the first flight, we would complete all ground tests to the extent that the plane could theoretically take off，”Zhao Min said，“Based on the development of procedures, quality procedures, technical and past experience, once we think it is equipped for flight, it can fly. The rest is the risk.But we have accumulated experience and modelling for so many years, and from a technological perspective the risk can be controlled and minimized.

    However, there may be unexpected events. Luo Yang would endure great pressure, and as the Field Commander for the development offaircraft models, he would have to coordinate the design and production departments of between one to two hundred cooperative units, to guarantee the relationship between the military and various production units.

    As General Manager of Original Equipment Manufacturing, he would manage the trial, production and testing, step by step, of tens of thousands of component parts of an aircraft, every link, even down to small screws, as these would ultimately be responsible for the life of the pilot. Due to the fact that Shenyang Aircraft Corporation is also a manufacturing plant of complete set, and the aircrafts would be passed on to the military, the final pressure would ultimately rest on Luo Yang.”

    Luo Yang concerned himself most with new aircraft trial operations, and would often go two or three times to see the tests during his day.

    Late one night, Luo Yang walked into the new aircraft trial unit. It was a brightly lit workshop, and the workers were in full swing.Luo Yang said to the head of the unit，“Eat something and rest.Do you have supper prepared yet?”The head of the unit said，“We all bring in our own suppers.Some bring bread, others eat instant noodles.”Luo Yang grew anxious，“This could be better, couldn't it?Won't it affect your health after a longer period of time working like this?”The next day on arrival, over a dozen camp beds had been put down in the corner, and it was told that Luo Yang had sent a team to bring them over, asking them to use the beds to get some rest if they were working overtime and couldn't make it home.

    Then, at 21：00 that night, the Trade Union head with some logisticals brought everybody hot noodles, porridge and bread, rolls, and various pickles, for the team to eat and enjoy with a warm heart. Luo Yang was informed that some of the employees had been working overtime for long periods, and would even work when needing to go to the hospital.Thus, he arranged doctors from the local 242 Hospital to come to the production site once a week to check the employees'bodies, bringing with them a box of medicines.In August, the workshops grew hot and uncomfortable, and Luo Yang asked the logistical team to ensure that they stay cool, also personally delivering freezers and fans to the workshop.

    Zhang Xiaoqiang, Flight Test Station Chief told me the“Warm Waist Treasure”story. At the end of every year as the test missions grow into particular focus, and Shenyang winter temperatures drop to minus ten to twenty degrees Celsius, with the empty airport runway looking very bleak.

    No matter how cold it would be, the crew is not able to wear thick clothing nor cotton coats, as they would need to keep track of debugging the aircraft, and wearing thick clothing may affect the operation and also increase the risk of accidents.

    During new aircraft testing at the aircraft flight command station, Luo Yang saw the workers dressed only in thin working vests and standing in the cold, and commented with distress to Zhang Xiaoqiang，“It's so cold yet they wear so little. We need to provide something, not to just accept that they are cold.”

    At home, Luo Yang found that a“Warm Waist Treasure”was very nice to use. It was a small, lightweight hand warmer accessory and could be used to retain warmth for several hours.He dedicated staff to buy some“Warm Waist Treasures”to issue to the frontline workers that had to work outdoors.When the workers were equipping these accessories onto their waists, they called them the“Warm Heart Treasures”assigned by Chief Luo.

    Luo Yang also transferred two air conditioned buses to the airstrip, so that the workers could take turns resting in the bus and warming up between shifts. Afterwards, this management was to become a cornerstone of the operation.

    Luo Yang said that if we are to raise our level of work to the task at hand, we must become more diligent to the health oflour workers too. In the past, the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation would provide check-ups once every three years.Starting from 2011，Luo Yang proposed at the employee's conference to reduce gaps between check-ups so that a worker could be checked once every two years, arranging more than 6，000 check-ups.Although the core experts would have check-ups once a year, as a core worker he did not admit himself to a check-up once in two years due to busy work.In August of last year, the corporation invited experts from the General Army Hospital to give a lecture on heart disease prevention, but Luo Yang did not attend.

    Once, whilst on site Luo Yang overheard a female worker saying that she had not seen her child in a number of days, as she would work overtime and arrive home after the child was asleep, and leave very early before the child woke up. Another young man said that his father was in hospital, but he didn't have time in the last month to go and see him.

    Luo Yang felt tortured in his heart, that with the heavy responsibilities of development of various aircraft models, many would work ceaselessly, an overtime was commonplace during the 24 hour shift work. Some of the workers had not returned home for a long time, and due to confidentiality could not tell their families what they were doing.

    Luo Yang suggested that the corporation Party Committee and Trade Union write“thank you”letters to the families. He autographed and sent it to each trade group head to give to each family, to allow for the families of workers to know that their relatives are contributing to the national defence.

    In the Trade Union of the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, I read this heartfelt message：

    Last year we harvested the joy of victory, but also we leave behind a memory. Everybody is together facing common challenges, and together fulfilling our promise and creating true miracles.During those days, in order to fulfil our tasks and objectives you worked, day and night, with no break or holiday, giving up precious time with your family and many of the luxuries of life.Myself and our enterprises are proud and honoured to work with you, our“iron army！”

    I must especially thank your families and loved ones, as our work would be impossible without their support and understanding, their payment and contribution. When our workers are working overtime, they quietly and without complaint supported their families.For this, I must offer my deepest apologies and acknowledgements.

    After the families read the Note of Thanks, many were deeply moved，“I would have never thought that my own family member was doing such an important job, we must understand them and support our loved ones.”

    On hearing that writers and journalists had come to interview people on Luo Yang's deeds, Yang Shengjie, a retired 76-year-old engineer from the Shenyang Aircraft Design Institute came to find us.

    Yang Shengjie told me that as a college graduate, Luo Yang was assigned to a group of No. 9 working on an environmental control chamber.He was the leader.The group was engaged in the J-8 aircraft“cockpit cover crash test”.At that time, the test means were very backward, every day during the field operations, dust would be blasted up from the field and would often cover people in dust.

    In the eyes of Yang Shengjie, Luo Yang was very practical, polite, quiet and willing to work hard. Whilst resting, he would read and play chess with workers.

    Whilst slowly telling stories of Luo Yang, Yang Shengjie would stop and choke up during the motional things.

    Suddenly the old man turned to me and said，“Today I came to find you to tell you something. What I have come to tell you now, nobody knows but for my wife.Nobody else has ever heard of them.I am being foolish……I gave Luo Yang a present once……”

    “You gave Luo Yang a present?”I was confused.

    “So foolish……”the old man looked guilty.

    Last Summer, Yang Shengjie'grandson graduated from college. Looking for work had become a major problem；his grandson had submitted his resume online three times, and participated in two job fairs, none of which was forthcoming.

    Yang Shengjie and his wife had raised their grandson, and, watching the child all day bored at home, they grew nervous about his future.

    Yang Shengjie's wife said，“We need to find a way to help him！Can't you go to Luo Yang?Isn't he the head of the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation?Couldn't he solve the problem oflour grandson's work in an instant?”

    On hearing his wife, Yang Shengjie said，“Yes！Yes！I will go to find Chief Luo now！”

    His wife said again，“Now we need to consider an appropriate gift for him. What do you think we should give?”

    Yang Shengjie thought for a bit and said，“It is absolutely impossible to give money. So be it.I will bring two bottles of Maotai liquors to him, but am afraid he would not accept.”

    After being transferred to Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, Luo Yang still retained his original living quarters. A few days after the conversation with his wife, Yang Shengjie went and knocked on Luo Yang's door.He was not home, so he gave his grandson's material to Luo Yang's wife Wang Xili, and when she was not watching, he put two bottles of liquors down on the coffee table.

    About a week later, Luo Yang's driver arrived to Yang Shengjie's house carrying back the two bottles of liquors and saying that they were sent by Luo Yang.

    After the driver had left, Yang Shengjie's wife let out a sigh，“The bottles are back；I don't think Luo Yang will solve the problem for us.”Yang Shengjie's heart sank, but he replied，“Lets wait and see, lets wait and see.”

    After a month of waiting, Yang Shengjie's wife could wait no longer.“What should we do?Did we give the wrong gift?As I told you, this generation of people expect money. If you don't gift cash then nothing gets done.”

    Yang Shengjie wrinkled his eyebrows, saying，“No, I don't think so. If I am not mistaken, I don't think Chief Luo is that kind of person……”

    Yang Shengjie had a habit of waking up at dawn and going to the communal exercise areas for a morning workout. He soon found out that every morning at 7am, a Shenyang Aircraft Corporation car would also take Luo Yang from the communal area.He told his wife that he would prepare for the next encounter with Luo Yang.

    This time, Yang Shengjie pocketed 20，000 RMB.

    Early that morning, Yang Shengjie“ambushed”Luo Yang by hiding behind a Holly tree next to Luo Yang's house. At 7：00，Luo Yang left the apartment block.

    The old man stepped forwards, calling out“Chief Luo！”

    Luo Yang looked up and, seeing Yang Shengjie said gently，“Master Yang！Up early?Out for a walk?”

    “I'm out to find you in fact，”the old man looked bit embarrassed.

    “Oh, please go ahead！Yes, I think of it, isn't it the job-hunting of your grandson?This kind of thing needs to follow the procedure and wait for the chance. Please wait patiently！”

    “Luo Yang, thank you so much……Take this 20，000 RMB，”said Yang Shengjie, taking an envelope from his pocket.

    Luo Yang's facial expression changed, as he said，“What is this for?”

    Yang Shengjie hesitated，“This, is not for you, it is to give to the staff you instruct……”

    “Master Yang, you really shouldn't……”said Luo Yang. He felt uncomfortable, but said no more for fear of embarrassing the elderly man.Luo Yang hurried to his car, and not forgetting to roll down the window, waved to the old man from inside as he left.

    Three days after Chinese National Day, Shenyang Aircraft Corporation's Human Resources Department notified Yang Shengjie's grandson that he could participate in the corporation's written examination and interview process. A week later, the young man was formally employed by the corporation.After this, Yang Shengjie many times prepared himself to express his thanks to Luo Yang, but in the end wasn't brave enough to do so.

    26th November

    Master Yang rose early for workout as usual, and as he passed through the institute district he saw poles erected on both sides of the streets, banners hung between them reading：

    “Comrade Luo Yang, we will always remember you！”

    “Farewell Chief Luo！”

    The old man's heart sank：What had happened?Was Chief Luo okay?

    At that moment, Xiao Liu of the institute office ran to him, and painfully told him：“After completing his mission yesterday, Chief Luo stepped off the Liaoning, suddenly had heart problems and passed away.”

    “My God！”Master Yang felt dizzy.

    On the day of Luo Yang's memorial service, the old man attended with a heavy feeling of guilt on his chest, thinking to himself：

    Chief Luo, how foolish I was……

    The China Aviation Industry Group Chairman Lin Zuoming was stricken with grief. He said，“In this period, Luo Yang was extremely tired, developing numerous aircraft models and preparing two for first flight tests, all of which had to be completed by the end of the year.He was just so tired, so exhausted, as though‘fractured by fatigue'.”

    What does it mean to be“fractured with fatigue”?

    When metals age or undergo excessive use, they undergo catastrophic failure. Due to the extreme conditions of Luo Yang's work, the pressure overcame his extreme resilience, resulting in fracture and departure of his soul.

    Deputy General Manager Li Yuhai of the China Aviation Industry Group said，“It is as though the aviation industry has had to finish a marathon, followed by five-kilometer cycling, followed by a 15 kilometer walk. This marathon has been achieved by the combined effort of struggle generation after generation！”

    Just as Kua Fu in Chinese ancient mythology constantly chased after the sun, the race was difficult but the runners were persistent. The objective was clear：a strong army, a strong nation, a strong China！

    Until the last moment of his life, Luo Yang was running at full speed……

    The form of a fighter！

    The true form of bravery！

    Just as the reporter Wu Qiao from the Beijing Times reported in a mourning article：“He perfectly completed his tasks, but just as our hero was invited to the celebration dinner, he was and will be forever absent from what would be the most beautiful time of his life. He was still young and of the most remarkable brilliance, dedicating himself to the cause of his fighter jets, yet he was unknown to the world until now.And now that his name is known, it is but the passing of life.Just like a comet, he shined brightest just as he was passing on, leaving the world with eternal regret and nostalgia at his departure.Emotionally, to almost everyone in our society, it is extremely difficult to accept the loss of perfection, the loss of Luo Yang.”

    27th November—Onboard the Liaoning

    As all of the the ship officers assembled on deck, each one faced the ski-jump platform, each one offering their reverence. This jump platform had just achieved the first perfect launch of Chinese Republic fighter jets, and also had bore witness to the most brilliant moment of Luo Yang's life.The Political Commissar of the Liaoning Mei Wen said in a dignified manner，“We were very shocked to hear the news of Luo Yang's death, and full of grief.Just two days ago, J-15 fighter jets were successfully landing on deck.We were talking together about further development of the aircraft, and of expectations for new aircraft.To turn and see that Luo Yang is gone, I feel a loyal comrade has passed and the nostalgia is gone.”

    “All of the ship officers and soldiers looked up to Luo Yang as an example, learnt from his boundless loyalty to the Party's cause, his noble character, and from his career he spared no efforts. He was completely dedicated to learning, and from his front line pragmatic style, he contributed through hard solid work to the early formation oflour combat aircraft！”

    At 9：00，the carrier sounded its horn, and the Liaoning enabled Luo Yang for his final journey.
