Cognitively, alcohol affects women's judgment and decision making differently from men's. A study published in Addiction in 2012 found women who drink alcohol might be likelier to experience the "beer goggle" effect—while drinking, to view others as attractive.
Excessive drinking is associated with more rapid brain atrophy among women compared to men. Researchers from the University of Heidelberg found alcohol-dependent women showed as much brain atrophy as alcohol-dependent men, despite their dependence being much shorter in duration.
Women's drinking habits, such as mixing alcohol with artificially sweetened drinks like Diet Coke, help them get drunk faster. A 2011 study from Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research found women consumed mixed drinks with caffeinated diet drinks significantly more than men—and that this consumption was associated with increased experiences of intoxication.
Women's drinking is also becoming riskier. For example, women's binge drinking, arrests for driving while intoxicated, and driver fatalities in DUI cases are rising quickly. A 2012 study in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs reported that in 1996 young men's risk of being in a fatal accident with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .10 was four times greater than for women. By 2007, women's risk equaled men's.
