    [7] 'Because an ass peeped' and 'All because of an ass's shadow'. The first, found in the corresponding passage of Lucian's Ass, is based on a long and ruinous law-suit brought by a potter against a man whose ass peeped in at his shop-window and broke some pots; the second, quoted by Plato and Menander, on the story of a dispute that broke out in a treeless desert between a traveller riding on an ass, and the driver from whom he had hired it. The traveller wished to take a siesta in the ass's shadow, but the driver refused on the ground that he had hired only the ass, not its shadow as well. Both men were eventually found dying from injuries that they had given each other, and the ass was nowhere to be seen.
